Hot on the heels of STEAK 001, praised by everyone from Thom Yorke to Sinden comes another 12” of karnival heat from Hanuman and Atki2’s Steak House imprint.

STEAK 002 sees label bosses Monkey Steak (Hanuman and Atki2) take the helm to deliver a release that fuses Soca, Funky and Bashment sounds with global influences and trademark Monkey Steak edits. The result is a record that’ll blow the roof off any dance!

A1: Hyped Up feat MC Zulu is an instant party classic. Featuring the
formidable vocal talents of the original badman MC Zulu. This tune is pure Soca Fire.

STEAK 002 A1 - Monkey Steak feat. MC Zulu - Hyped Up! by Steak House Records

A2: Bombeiros! is the riddim of Hyped Up and a huge tune in its own right.
Chromatic Bass and galloping Soca Beats raise the temperature on this tropical banger. One for the Airhorns Crew!

STEAK 002 - A2 Monkey Steak - Bombeiros! (Hyped Up Instrumental) by Steak House Records

STEAK 002 B1 - Monkey Steak - Tigris Riddim by Steak House Records

Warrior One - DJ Mix

This mix has been on repeat for me since I first received it and its only fair that I share it because its huge! Warrior One are two producers from West London making some of the freshest and most exciting tunes I've heard in a while. Proper Karnival House heat! According the their bio:

"Warrior One is a master yoga pose dedicated to Virabhadra, the name of a fierce warrior incarnation of Shiva, who had a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, and a thousand feet, and wields a thousand clubs whilst wearing a tiger's skin. Deadly."

Their new EP (Including a fierce voicing by the one and only Lady Chann) is dropping Feb 15th on their own king pigeon label and you can grab the mix below.

JOY ORBISON: DOLDRUMS 001 MIX

Its been floating around for a while but I just picked up this rather wonderful Joy Orbison mix up from Trash Menagerie. This is perfect music for a hazy Sunday. Delirious synths wash around you, bringing with them swells of bass and strutting beats which swing between techno, funky, 2step, and speed garage. Put this on and let it coax you out of your hangover.

Rubi Dan - Bashment Funky

The whole Bashment Funky takeover shows no signs of slowing down. People like Gabriel Heatwave (with his excellent Funky Bashment mix) and of course our own Steak House Crew have been pushing this sound hard recently. Sometime heatwave vocalist and all round bad boy Rubi Dan has come up with this latest Karnival banger alongside Juxci with the two of them spitting fire over The Bop Riddim. You can grab it below:

Mayer Hawthorne - Just Aint Gonna Work Out

I was doing a bit of digging for info on the New Snoop Dogg Album, Malice in Wonderland when I came across a video that Diplo had posted to his twitter feed from hiphopDX.
I'd never heard of Mayer Hawthorne but was intrigued enough from the short clip to do some googling. According to his label, Stone's Throw:

"Mayer Hawthorne grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, just outside of Detroit, and vividly remembers, as a child, driving with his father and tuning the car radio in to the rich soul and jazz history the region provided....(he) but draws the most inspiration from the music of Smokey Robinson, Curtis Mayfield, and the legendary songwriting and production trio of Lamont Dozier, Brian Holland, and Eddie Holland Jr"

Listening through to his stuff on youtube, this really comes across. At first listen his music is completely timeless, you can't tell if you're listening to modern versions of old tracks, or completely new stuff. The record that really blew me away is the gorgeously designed 10" Just Aint gonna Work Out. Pressed onto candy red heart shaped vinyl, these two tracks are equal parts J-Dilla and Smokey Robinson with just a nod in the direction of Prince's Slow Love. You can get the digital at Juno and Boomkat and you can hear the tunes below.

The Benga Bus is Coming

I’ve been enjoying these two cheeky bootlegs from the wonderfully named Benga Boys. Taking Benga’s already party friendly Night and Crunked Up and mashing them together with the infectious pop of Kid Cudi’s Day and Night and Outkast’s Stankonia classic The Whole World.

These tunes are straight up party classics and you can grab them in their full 320 glory below.

Steak House Records - STEAK 001

Its finally happening. STEAK 001 is coming out! The first record on our own imprint is on its way. Distributed by ST Holdings its due out in late September or early October and its pure carnival fire! Read on for more info and to hear the tunes. Feel free to leave us some comments we'd love to know what you think.

STEAK 002 and STEAK 003 soon come!

STEAK 001 brings together the hottest Global Bass talent from the Iberian Peninsula: Octa Push and Mr Gasparov.

Mr. Gasparov is Lisbon’s premier purveyor of Intelligent Bass Music. Using graphics tablets, midi controllers and a synth made from an old McDonalds till point, Mr Gasparov makes intricate, bass heavy dub techno / two step crossovers that will destroy any dancefloor with enough detail to keep the experimental heads attention.

‘1975′ is a slow build 2step workout with skittery beats and thumping sub that delivers in all the right places. Think El-B meets Aphex Twin under a tropical sky.

Mr Gasparov - 1975

Mr Gasparov - 1975 by Steak House Records

Octa Push were formed when Portuguese Bass Music pioneer Conspira challenged producers Mushug and Dizzycutter to join forces and create a totally live dance music project. Their unique fusion of Bashment, UK Garage and Dubstep with other elements like Afrobeat and Techno has put them at the forefront of the Iberian electronic music scene with explosive performances at places like SONAR, Glade, and Fabric.

Ai Nadia is a throbbing afro-step monster. Shuddering sub bass and chanted vocals collide to create something very special indeed.

Octa Push - Ai Nadia

Octa Push - Ai Nadia by Steak House Records

‘Laika Likes it’ combines sweet female vocals, broken garage beats, and pounding bass to devastating effect. This is a tune firmly for the hips.

Octa Push - Laika Likes It by Steak House Records

Toddla T - Fabriclive 47

Toddla T contributes the latest installment to the Fabric Live mix series which hits record shops today. We're particularly excited about this one as it features an unreleased Monkey Steak beat called Tigris Riddim! Other artists represented include Toddla himself (of course), Skream, Oris Jay, Sticky, Deadmau5, Geeneus, Untold, Lil Silva etc etc! Check the Fabric website here for the full tracklist....

Here's a complete track off the mix, hosted by Black Plastic (this is one of my personal favourites) - Lady Chann gets heavy on classic a Sticky riddim... Ms Dynamite first spat "Boo" to this one!

Groucho Marxx - Mix and Free Tunes

A mix and some free tunes from one of my favourite producers on the scene right now. Groucho Marxx draws elements from house, uk funky, afrobeat, baile funk etc to create a sound that is altogether his own. I've been rinsing his tunes out everywhere recently and he's very kindly let me give a couple of them away free on the blog.

First up though, a recent mix that I picked up from his blog. You can grab it here:

Groucho Marxx - Deep Mundial Mix

Tracklist.
1.Andre Torquato Project-Manfrida
2.Dom Haywood-London
3.Dop-Lighthouse
4.Dj Romain-The Oneness Of Ro'
5.Franky Rizardo-Afrika
6.Suges-We Own The Night
7.Groucho Marxx-Voodoo Doll
8.Theo Parrish-Falling Up (Carl Craig Remix)
9.Richard Les Crees-Dengon (Frederik Stark Dub)
10.Blaze-Revolution Poem

Now the tunes. Funky Lagos is an afro house monster that sounds like 2 parts Masters at Work, 1 part Fela Kuti, served in a tall glass with plenty of ice.

Groucho Marxx - Funky Lagos

El Cubano combines latin keys with funky house beats and bass to devastating effect. Every time I've played this out it has gone off:

Original Chappa - High Grade

The guys from Gothenburg's Blenda Sound just sent through some mp3s of a new project they've been working on. They've hooked up with vocalist Original Chappa to produce Block Corner, his debut album. From what I've heard of the album so far its going to be big; dirty electronic bass and upfront dancehall beats sweetenened with dubby keys and Chappa's soulful vocals. Killer

High Grade is unsurprisingly a paean to reggae's favourite herb. It's a fiery bashment number with a killer bassline and you can grab it here:

Original Chappa - High Grade

In other news, we've just started a youtube channel. At the moment its only got a couple of Glade videos up there (including Brother Wetlands getting sexy here) but we'll be adding all the forthcoming tunes in the Steak House stable very soon. You can have a look here:

Octa Push - Kolokani - free mp3

In a wave of hype-building, bed-wetting anticipation for their forthcoming EPs on Iberian Records and Steak House Records (no less), Bruno and Leo once again show their unbelievable (and one could say reckless) generosity by giving away another of their hot productions! Frankly, I'm still reeling from their remix of Buraka Som Sistema's Sound of Kuduro, and "Kolokani" is equally essential. As you'd expect from Lisbon's finest bass makers, this tune is pure dancefloor fire!

Octa Push - Kolokani

"Ai Nadia" and "Laika Likes It" by Octa Push, backed by "1975" by Mr Gasparov will be released on Steak House Records this autumn.

Joyce Muniz Mixtape

I'm at home ill at the moment but am being sustained by the simply wonderful Joyce Muniz mixtape that I picked up off DiscoBelle.

Man Recordings, Germany's greatest purveyor of tropical heat have started a mixtape series. As label boss, Daniel Haaksman says:

"As every gentleman´s motto is “Ladies first”, here´s the Man Rec Mixtape #1 by our beloved Joyce Muniz: It´s full of new and unreleased tropical heat from Solo to Riva Starr, Man Rec classics re-edited, to new baile bangers and house shakers - a mix perfect to grind your sun tanned bodies at the pool."

If the rest of the series is anything like this then Haaksman is onto something very special indeed.

Forensics Giveaway

Forensics, master of moody minimalism has very kindly given us a track from his My Strength is my Weakness mini album (DIGISINLP05) to give away on the blog. Up at Dawn is a brooding and claustrophobic ambient piece where brittle, lo-fi acoustic guitar fights for breathing space with brutal Beneath a Steel Skyesque atmospherics.

Basically, its well moody and we like it. It’ll only be up for a limited time so grab it now while you can.

New Steak House mashup: Natasja vs NB Funky

Over the last few months I have been finding the combination of dancehall/bashment with UK funky completely irresistable. Stush's voicing on Hard House Banton's Sirens, or Maxwell D's Funky Funky Funky mixtape with DJ Sidies (which you can download here btw) featuring vocals on many of the current funky anthems, have regularly appeared on my warm-summer playlists.

So time, I thought, to record a version of a mash up I've been recently featuring in my live sets, featuring the vocal (and riff) from Natasja and Enur's huge Bonfire track and NB Funky favourite Riddim Box. Enjoy!

The Heatwave - Its Official

Apparently its official. We are in the midst of a heatwave. Don't panic though, we still have a while before the crops whither and the earth cracks. Until then I suggest that you get down you local park/garden with a few cold beers and some good tunes and soak up the sun. God knows its rare enough in the UK.

To that end, here's some DJ mixes that are perfect for lazing on a sunny afternoon. First up I have to send some thanks to my man thinkyman (via the always brilliant Generation Bass) who pointed me in the direction of this excellent minimix from Andy Kisaragi of LBFM (don't google LBFM at work, I did and got a surprise) 15 tracks of pure global bass fire in 15 minutes, this mix covers a lot of ground from hip hop to bhangra to balkan beat. Grab it here:

Toddla put this cheeky little mix together with MC Serocee to celebrate Fabric’s 9th Birthday last year. Toddla T and Serocee – Happy Birthday Fabric.

Milanese Bootlegs

Just came across this cheeky pair of Bootlegs on the excellent Music Forest blog (excellent if you read Japanese, pretty good even if you can't). Mr Milanese has had his fingers on the remix buttons and done a couple of cheeky bootlegs of tunes from his 2006 debut album Extend.

Caramel fixup takes his sublime Caramel Cognac and blends it with Dizzee Rascal's dancefloor smash Fix Up Look Sharp turning into a brooding bass heavy monster:

Milanese - Caramel Fixup

Timbaland's
- The Way I Are gets the mashup treatment on Peggy Land; Milanese gluing it together with the skewed hip hop of Peggy Flynn III:

Milanese - Peggy Land

In other bootleg news Bristol Bass Wunderkind Gemmy has done a couple of genius remixes of the Sonic the Hedgehog theme. I don't have downloads for these but you can stream them from the consistently excellent highrise blog here.

Music For The Tube Strike

The London Underground strike has meant that my trips to the office are taking a lot longer than usual. The upside of this is that I’ve got loads more time to listen to music on the way in. Below are some recent (and one not so recent) mixes that have been cheering me up amidst sweaty bus rides and long walks across the capital.

First up is Gabriel Heatwave’s excellent new Early Warming mix. This mix has kept me smiling and enjoying looking at London through the windows of the 43.

Musically Massive

Just got the promo through for the new David Last / MC Zulu album Musically Massive and it really does live up to its name. Last has put together an album of tight minimal dancehall, house, soca and carnival riddims. The mighty Zulu's vocal work references everything from cult film The Warriors, Spanish fly, and doo wop.

Ghettoblaster is a cheeky electro dancehall banger that sounds like it could've come out of the Toddla T mix of the same name:

David Last Vs MC Zulu: Ghettoblaster

Put me on your Guest List employs the formidable MPC/Vocal talents of CX Kidtronik (download his excellent Krak Attack Mixtape here) to make a proper bass heavy 4/4 monster that fuses elements of funky, soca, hip hop, and house:

Kymatik Mix Archive

The Kymatik Mix Archive is now online at http://www.kymatik.co.uk. Neil Kymatik was a luminary of the Bristol Dubstep scene; co founder of the excellent Soul Motive record label, byte resident and all round good chap. After Kymatik's untimely death earlier this year, some friends got together to provide a fitting tribute to the dubstep don by creating a place where all of his mixes would be permanently archived. Anger Management

Slew Dem's Tempa T has a fierce new tune on garage connoisseur's label of choice no hats no hoods. Next Hype is grime at its angriest, Tempz spitting pure venom over a stripped back synth and kick drum rhythm. Pure Grime bombast with a great video featuring the big dog Westwood.

Plastician, Brackles, and Scratcha DVA are on remix duties. Scratcha takes the original and pushes it an even darker direction, all shuddering bass and broken arcade machine synths sparing with Tempa's vocals over a skanking grimestep beat. This tune will destroy any dance you'll be at over the summer:

He Bangs the Drums

DJ Zhao from Berlin's Ngoma Sound System crew has been making waves with his Global Bassweight series of mixes recently. Ngoma, according to their blog are:

"Ngoma: Swahili word meaning Drums, Dance, and Song. Soundsytem: The positive side of globalization-- bass culture and musical heritage fuse; ultra-modern riddims meet the wealth of local flavors; irresistable next-level urban dance music arise on every continent. India, Cuba, Tanzania, Egypt, Cape Town, these are just a few destinations where wild styles are born, crucial new scenes thrive - places out of reach to most - NGOMA ambassadors of funk bring the heat from party hotspots across the known world - the wickedest beats and sweetest flows."

Zhao's mixes effortlessly fuse the sounds of the Global South with UK and Eurocentric Garage, Dubstep, Grime and Funky house riddims to create a sound that straddles genres and continents with ease, dropping sonic bombs that destroy dancefloors from London to Kinshasa to Denpasar and back again.

All of Ngoma's mixes are pure fire but my favourite is the Fusion Part 1 mix which takes traditional and contemorary music from places like Turkey, Indonesia, and Ethiopia and places it alongside heavyweight riddims by the likes of Pinch, Danny Weed, Wiley and Shackleton.

You can stream it from Get Darker here:

Dragonfly release / Ruffnek Diskotek Mega Bashment

I'm delighted to announce that the good folk at Terminal Dusk have just released my tune "Dragonfly" on their latest 12" compilation Viridian. The track features an original vocal by Bihani Sarkar, from a recording session which originally came about when my twin brother and I collaborated on a play soundtrack about 5 years ago! So far, the record is available from Juno, Chemical and Redeye. You can also check out a a VJ piece made by TheDave on YouTube featuring the full track here.

If you're in Bristol this weekend, make sure you get down to Ruffnek Diskotek at the Black Swan! As usual, we've put together a massive line up :) I'm particularly excited about catching future Steak House collaborater Mr Gasparov who has put together a very special live show for the night! Also, headliner Ghislain Poirer is currently giving away an awesome remix/mashup, using the Wha-La-La-Leng riddim from his ep Soca Sound System (out now on Ninja Tune) and the acapella of Major Lazer feat. Mr. Lexx and Santigold. Seriously get downloading, this tune is BIG!

Do You Want Chips With That?

2009 seems to be the year of 8-Bit. Producers like Quarta 330 and Disrupt have been tearing up dancefloors with their unique blending of bleeps, tones and crunchy white noise beats. The UK is developing its very own chiptune scene and we’re delighted to be able to post tunes by two young Turks of the scene.

First up is Sheffield’s BitSlap. This man of many monikers has been active in the Sheffield music scene for over a decade; first as one of the organisers of near legendary c90 parties and latterly as one of the chaps behind new Squonk Bass night We Wear the Gold with shadowy enigma DJ Derek Tibbs.

Cherry Aid is the sound of the Super Mario Brothers attending a New Orleans funeral. The shuffling halfstep patterns and mournful synth lines clash with a skanking chromatic bass rundown and shuffling white noise snares to create a sound that’s both sombre and slinky.

BitSlap – Cherry Aid

Rochdale’s finest Ă©migrĂ© Breakwhore is part of Bristol’s Blunderphonics crew. His tune Greasychipstep is like encountering the final boss from double dragon on the stairs at DMZ.

A Talented Designer

People have been saying very nice things about the artwork for our new EP so I thought that I should take some time to mention the designer behind the labels. Her name is Anne Larsson and she's a freelance graphic designer and illustrator from Sweden whose work is absolutely amazing. When she heard the that the EP was called Ratatosk's Tree she immediately got to work in illustrating the Norse myth. You can see her result here along with the excellent voodoo imagery she did for the other side.

Anne's website is here and you can contact her for commissions here. She also has blogs here and here.

New Monkey Steak EP.

We've got a Brand New EP about to come out on Chrissy Murderbot's rather wonderful Sleazetone imprint. It's 5 tracks of wonky Bassline, Soca, and Baile Funk put through the Steak House filters.

This is what people are saying about it:

Ratatosk's Tree" EP, their first release for Sleazetone, sees them taking things in a more bassline-oriented direction, with 5 tracks of forward-thinking 4x4 anthems informed by garridge & dubstep, with some Latin-American / Carribean vibes thrown in the mix. “Warpath”, “Sexypumpy”, and “Voodoo is Everywhere” are absolute stormers—heavy-hitting bassline cuts with an abstract bent that will keep the experimental heads’ attention. “Veuve Edouard” is a throbbing bass monster—baile funk meets dubstep production quality. Rounding out the pack, “History!” is a fast-moving soca-influenced dancefloor smasher with some absolutely SICK sub bass.

If you can't wait for the vinyl then you can grab a copy of History right here:

Monkey Steak - History!

Our very dear feline friend Word the Cat put his own unique take on the tune with a chopped and screwed version for all the sizzup heads. You can grab it here:
