Steak House Vs Pollinate Radio Show w/Joao Brazil

Once again we join forces with Pollinate Records to present our monthly show. A show of new exclusive tunes, old favorites, boozy banter, special guests and a smoky room full of excitable fans.

João Brasil "L.O.V.E. Banana" feat. Lovefoxxx from CSS from Man Recordings on Vimeo.

This month we’ve invited our local funk master, João Brasil down to perform a special set! He’s an MPC whizz, certified mashup king, Fatboy Slim’s favourite Brasilian and the man behind the sexiest video of 2011 so far!

Joao’s newest hit, ‘L.O.V.E Banana’ has been released by Man Recordings. The lovely Lovefoxxx from CSS sings about the banana and how she loves it. It’s a cheeky number that’s already hitting the summer chartsmiths hard and having already tallied 25000 views it’s destined for big things. Get it!

We’re dead excited to have him in Studio 54 this Wednesday (8th June). Listen in to Hivemind.fm between the hours of 8pm & 10pm.

Mix Monday: Andy Payback - +Computer Rule+ Soundboy Killing In A Digital Style

At the Peng Sound club night last month (a great small party located in the basement Take 5 Cafe on Stokes Croft), I had the pleasure of getting my skank on to the latest selection from underground Bristol legend Andy Payback.

Andy's soundboy credentials hark back some 22 years when he began collecting records; all types of Jamaican sounds, early soul and rhythm and blues, disco and electronics, post-punk and Miami Bass, and has been repping these sounds out in and around Bristol for the last 12 years.

Andy also used to co-promote one Bristol's first electronic events, Pedestrian, in the late 90s and early 00s, booking the likes of Four Tet, Bogdan Raczynski and The Bug for their Bristol debuts! While Pedestrian closed their doors for business in 2003, Andy has had time to return to his early love of Reggae, particular the Digital sound from around 1985-1991. His favourite labels include Jammy$, Redman International, Parish, Fashion, Firehouse, Waterhouse and Witty, and producers such as Gussie P, Steely & Cleevie, Hugh James, Philip Smart, King Jammy, Edgar Whyte, Fatman and Peego. He also teamed up with legendary Payback Record stall in Bristol's St Nick's covered market, and continues to promote and play his sounds all over the city.

Like Andy, I'm a sucker for this particular offshoot of reggae, and this blinding mix demonstrates his thorough and detailed knowledge of the genre. As for the title, and for the theme of this mix, Andy says "this title is more than just a tired cliche or overused signifier bolted onto another tepid Reggae mix to lend it some sort of authenticity. This is a mix of 100% soundboy-killing Dancehall records from the Digital era ... All played from 7"s, 12"s and LPs."

This mix really is a treat and reveals a master selector at work! And as the man says, "All counteractions welcome...."
