Mix Monday: Kid Kameleon EXCLUSIVE MIX

A very special exclusive mixtape this week comes courtesy of San Francisco based DJ, Writer, and all round bad boy Kid Kameleon. KK first came to our attention way back in 2004 with a pair of mixes he did for Kid 606's excellent Shockout Label. The absolutely shocking and even more shocking mixtapes mashed together Breakcore, Dancehall, and Electronica with quirky pop in a genuinely new and exciting way. Since then he's been building a name for himself worldwide with a series of devastating DJ mixes, articles and podcasts for XLR8R, and as part of SF's Surya Dub crew

This time the kid has turned his attention to future garage/post dubstep/ Wot do you call it with his Stop asking me what Genre this is mix. KK has been at the forefront of those pushing this sound in the US and his mix is a showcase of the hot new tunes of the moment.

You can grab Part 2 exclusively from the Steak House Blog below. Part 1? Thats over on the excellent Frite Nite Site.

Steak House Records - STEAK 001

Its finally happening. STEAK 001 is coming out! The first record on our own imprint is on its way. Distributed by ST Holdings its due out in late September or early October and its pure carnival fire! Read on for more info and to hear the tunes. Feel free to leave us some comments we'd love to know what you think.

STEAK 002 and STEAK 003 soon come!

STEAK 001 brings together the hottest Global Bass talent from the Iberian Peninsula: Octa Push and Mr Gasparov.

Mr. Gasparov is Lisbon’s premier purveyor of Intelligent Bass Music. Using graphics tablets, midi controllers and a synth made from an old McDonalds till point, Mr Gasparov makes intricate, bass heavy dub techno / two step crossovers that will destroy any dancefloor with enough detail to keep the experimental heads attention.

‘1975′ is a slow build 2step workout with skittery beats and thumping sub that delivers in all the right places. Think El-B meets Aphex Twin under a tropical sky.

Mr Gasparov - 1975

Mr Gasparov - 1975 by Steak House Records

Octa Push were formed when Portuguese Bass Music pioneer Conspira challenged producers Mushug and Dizzycutter to join forces and create a totally live dance music project. Their unique fusion of Bashment, UK Garage and Dubstep with other elements like Afrobeat and Techno has put them at the forefront of the Iberian electronic music scene with explosive performances at places like SONAR, Glade, and Fabric.

Ai Nadia is a throbbing afro-step monster. Shuddering sub bass and chanted vocals collide to create something very special indeed.

Octa Push - Ai Nadia

‘Laika Likes it’ combines sweet female vocals, broken garage beats, and pounding bass to devastating effect. This is a tune firmly for the hips.

Original Chappa - High Grade

The guys from Gothenburg's Blenda Sound just sent through some mp3s of a new project they've been working on. They've hooked up with vocalist Original Chappa to produce Block Corner, his debut album. From what I've heard of the album so far its going to be big; dirty electronic bass and upfront dancehall beats sweetenened with dubby keys and Chappa's soulful vocals. Killer

High Grade is unsurprisingly a paean to reggae's favourite herb. It's a fiery bashment number with a killer bassline and you can grab it here:

Original Chappa - High Grade

In other news, we've just started a youtube channel. At the moment its only got a couple of Glade videos up there (including Brother Wetlands getting sexy here) but we'll be adding all the forthcoming tunes in the Steak House stable very soon. You can have a look here:

Forensics Giveaway

Forensics, master of moody minimalism has very kindly given us a track from his My Strength is my Weakness mini album (DIGISINLP05) to give away on the blog. Up at Dawn is a brooding and claustrophobic ambient piece where brittle, lo-fi acoustic guitar fights for breathing space with brutal Beneath a Steel Skyesque atmospherics.

Basically, its well moody and we like it. It’ll only be up for a limited time so grab it now while you can.

Finally a little nod to my man Toddla T for this mix that I came across the other day on the FriedMyLittleBrain blog. Toddla put this cheeky little mix together with MC Serocee to celebrate Fabric’s 9th Birthday last year. I don’t have a tracklist but I can tell you that one of the first tunes he plays is an exclusive Monkey Steak tune that’s coming out on steak House later in the year.

Milanese Bootlegs

Just came across this cheeky pair of Bootlegs on the excellent Music Forest blog (excellent if you read Japanese, pretty good even if you can't). Mr Milanese has had his fingers on the remix buttons and done a couple of cheeky bootlegs of tunes from his 2006 debut album Extend.

Caramel fixup takes his sublime Caramel Cognac and blends it with Dizzee Rascal's dancefloor smash Fix Up Look Sharp turning into a brooding bass heavy monster:

Milanese - Caramel Fixup

Timbaland's
- The Way I Are gets the mashup treatment on Peggy Land; Milanese gluing it together with the skewed hip hop of Peggy Flynn III:

Milanese - Peggy Land

In other bootleg news Bristol Bass Wunderkind Gemmy has done a couple of genius remixes of the Sonic the Hedgehog theme. I don't have downloads for these but you can stream them from the consistently excellent highrise blog here.

The Kymatik Mix Archive is now online at http://www.kymatik.co.uk. Neil Kymatik was a luminary of the Bristol Dubstep scene; co founder of the excellent Soul Motive record label, byte resident and all round good chap. Anger Management

Slew Dem's Tempa T has a fierce new tune on garage connoisseur's label of choice no hats no hoods. Next Hype is grime at its angriest, Tempz spitting pure venom over a stripped back synth and kick drum rhythm. Pure Grime bombast with a great video featuring the big dog Westwood.

Plastician, Brackles, and Scratcha DVA are on remix duties. Scratcha takes the original and pushes it an even darker direction, all shuddering bass and broken arcade machine synths sparing with Tempa's vocals over a skanking grimestep beat. This tune will destroy any dance you'll be at over the summer:

He Bangs the Drums

DJ Zhao from Berlin's Ngoma Sound System crew has been making waves with his Global Bassweight series of mixes recently. Ngoma, according to their blog are:

"Ngoma: Swahili word meaning Drums, Dance, and Song. Soundsytem: The positive side of globalization-- bass culture and musical heritage fuse; ultra-modern riddims meet the wealth of local flavors; irresistable next-level urban dance music arise on every continent. India, Cuba, Tanzania, Egypt, Cape Town, these are just a few destinations where wild styles are born, crucial new scenes thrive - places out of reach to most - NGOMA ambassadors of funk bring the heat from party hotspots across the known world - the wickedest beats and sweetest flows."

Zhao's mixes effortlessly fuse the sounds of the Global South with UK and Eurocentric Garage, Dubstep, Grime and Funky house riddims to create a sound that straddles genres and continents with ease, dropping sonic bombs that destroy dancefloors from London to Kinshasa to Denpasar and back again.

All of Ngoma's mixes are pure fire but my favourite is the Fusion Part 1 mix which takes traditional and contemorary music from places like Turkey, Indonesia, and Ethiopia and places it alongside heavyweight riddims by the likes of Pinch, Danny Weed, Wiley and Shackleton.

You can stream it from Get Darker here:

Dragonfly release / Ruffnek Diskotek Mega Bashment

I'm delighted to announce that the good folk at Terminal Dusk have just released my tune "Dragonfly" on their latest 12" compilation Viridian. The track features an original vocal by Bihani Sarkar, from a recording session which originally came about when my twin brother and I collaborated on a play soundtrack about 5 years ago! So far, the record is available from Juno, Chemical and Redeye. You can also check out a a VJ piece made by TheDave on YouTube featuring the full track here.

New Monkey Steak EP.

We've got a Brand New EP about to come out on Chrissy Murderbot's rather wonderful Sleazetone imprint. It's 5 tracks of wonky Bassline, Soca, and Baile Funk put through the Steak House filters.

This is what people are saying about it:

Ratatosk's Tree" EP, their first release for Sleazetone, sees them taking things in a more bassline-oriented direction, with 5 tracks of forward-thinking 4x4 anthems informed by garridge & dubstep, with some Latin-American / Carribean vibes thrown in the mix. “Warpath”, “Sexypumpy”, and “Voodoo is Everywhere” are absolute stormers—heavy-hitting bassline cuts with an abstract bent that will keep the experimental heads’ attention. “Veuve Edouard” is a throbbing bass monster—baile funk meets dubstep production quality. Rounding out the pack, “History!” is a fast-moving soca-influenced dancefloor smasher with some absolutely SICK sub bass.

If you can't wait for the vinyl then you can grab a copy of History right here:

Monkey Steak - History!

Our very dear feline friend Word the Cat put his own unique take on the tune with a chopped and screwed version for all the sizzup heads. You can grab it here:
